The Guardian: SFO may launch probe into Peston bank scoops
The Serious Fraud Office could launch an inquiry into BBC business editor Robert Peston's recent string of market-moving banking 'scoops' after David Cameron's Tories raised suspicions that he could have a 'mole' inside 10 Downing Street or the Treasury.

Maybe a better title for this article would have been Peston the Pawn!

I'm shocked! You mean he might be a New Lab poodle! Then again he does have the same inky black pools for eyes that Brown & the Miliband twins have, the sort of eyes when you look at them they go to a quite disturbing deep untrustworthy nothingness, almost like staring into the abyss.

Wonder if they are also going to investigate how rumours circulate just before a company announcement (RNS) is made, watch any financial discussion board and you'll see the rumours go around, the price fluctuate accordingly, then news confirmed the next day.
Have to laugh at Camerons suggestiong that Peston has a mole in 10 Downing Street, the guy was Gordon Browns biographer for gods sake.
A government without leaks? Is such a thing possible?
Whilst I'm not a labour fan, it certainly looks like Cameron is clutching at straws here.

I thought he was just the Treasury spokesman.

mark @3
yes, it's hard to see why this case is raises eyebrows, it really is
chicken feed compared to the crimes that led to the crunch/crash
which are not being investigated.
No calls in the Tory ranks for an investigation of Barclay's etc.

Agreed, mken - more pathetic party politics while the real issues are ignored. Of course the Tories are as much in favour of keeping the status quo as Labour, being the party of City deregulation themselves.

Mken,Shipbuilder,
I think that's the whole point though! To divert attentions from the real issues.

Robert Peston is a tool in all interpretations of the word.
It shouldn't surprise anyone as the BBC is simply the government of the days mouthpiece.
Check out the next few news programmes. almost all the leading stories will strat with the words "The government...." as if all roads start and end with our leaders.
The were bad enough before Gilligan, 45 minutes, Dr David Kelly and the Hutton report. Now it's completely full of people whose noses are covered in sh!te !
Peston and the BBC simply reak of government pressure and involvement. Disgusting !

Unless of course he manages to relate his extraordinary prescience in some way to the Saudi-Eurofighter deal, in which case the SFO can't touch him. Those are the rules.

when the markets are 'moving' there's always something to blame, rogue traders, short sellers and robert peston and none of them make sense.

The British have a blame culture. few ever take responsibility for anything, these days. NuLabour are characterised by indecisiveness and poor leadership.
OK, it may be that Peston did something wrong but the whole Economic/Financial mess up has permitted a lot of people to benefit as well as savers and pension holders to suffer.

I couldn't agree more Alan.
