bbc: Akzo Nobel set to cut 3,500 jobs
The world's largest paintmaker, Akzo Nobel, is to cut 3,500 jobs by 2011 as part of a cost-cutting drive.
Akzo Nobel, which bought ICI in an £8bn deal earlier this year, said the move to trim costs would lead to extra savings of 100m euros ($144m; £79m).

I would like to see someone start a website listing Job cuts like they used to show on the news in the 80's

Cut taxes and the public sector. Sooner or later the UK will have unemployment over 10%. Let people have their disposable incomes, and let redundant public sector workers take advantage of government assistance (as is their due) while the assistance is still available.
Why are we waiting ?
Given that job losses are accelerating, we will get to an additional million unemployed in under 6 months. What it will be like by the end of 2009 ? All of these job losses will come from the private sector. The longer we leave the situation to develop the less able we will be to assist those in distress.
Do we really want to read at the end of 2009 that unemployment is over 10% and the government finances are broken?

Government covers about half the workforce am I right? So if we lose loads of private sector employees on top of everything else the government borrowing will continue to grow. It's more like the brontosaurus in the room than an elephant. The pound is taking a beating and I can only see it continuing.
Strangely, most people I know still see this as something in the papers, rather than something that affects them. More job losses will be the way it comes home, I guess.

You are dead right.God only knows the amount of private sector workforce indirectly relying on government too. This is truly going the way of catastrophe.
