Growth on downward trend, credit card bill soaring

BBC News: UK confirms economy at standstill

The UK economy saw no growth in the second quarter of 2008, while the gap in the current account widened to its highest level in almost a year.

The last line of this article reads:

"Analysts [anonymous] say the government may want to consider a cut in interest rates."

And there's me thinking it's the BoE, not the government that decides that. Lucky I've got the BBC to set me straight -- Good to see their reporting up to it's usual standards.

The devil is in the detail of this report, read it carefully and you will spot that 'the new data takes into account improved methodology'. If this 'new methodology' had not been in place the 0% growth quoted should have been more like -0.1%. The new method of calculation has resulted in figures going up rather than down and has effectively delayed the 'official' reporting of a recession by 3 months.
