Sounds similar to what happened over Cuba.
Except of course, the United States was planning an invasion & had been carrying out subversion & terrorist attacks against Cuba for years.
The mainstream media made out that the US won when Kruschev backed down, but of course a deal was made secretly & the US took it's Nukes out of Turkey & the USSR effectively managed to deter America from invading another country & turning it into a brutal Capitalist Proxy Dictatorship like it did with Indonesia, Guatemala, El Salvador, Chile, Ecuador, Brazil & many others.

if you heard Brzezinski on the radio the other day, he said fick (Ger:) em, they simply cannot be allowed to get away with this aggression. The presenter said, "but what about their oil and gas reserves". He reiterated his position. I agree.

Ukraine is the real hot-spot here - they are strong allies of the Georgians, and Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has already flown to Tblisi to show support for his friend Saakashvilli. The Ukranian government has banned access to Ukrainian ports for Russian ships in the Black Sea. They are headed for a confrontation, and with the Northern half of Ukraine populated mainly by Russians, there could easily be a flashpoint.
And just to prove there is a financial angle to all this:

I agree...discussions about house prices seem quite insignificant when these sort of issues arise. If the very worst happens then house prices go to zero! Will it all blow over? I sincerely hope so...but who knows. I would imagine that Dick Cheney is in his element at the moment...a seriously dangerous man!

Defence spending to go up significantly? Where's that coming from?

TC, dinnae ye fret!
We survived the last Cold War, and it's pushed this "The planet is heating up and we're all going to die" nonsense off the front page.
Finally, the Russians appear to have one single solitary source of income, being oil gas that they sell to Europe. They're not going to nuke their only customer, are they?

Congratulations on the successful business deals for the American (or whatever) missile manufacurers, which would certainly contribute to the boosting of the global economy. It's a good news to all of us. Well done.

LOL all the peace-niks, BBC luvvies and Michael Moore lovers suddenly realise the US isn't the Great Satan after all. In fact in the event of Russian aggression they'll be pleading for US military intervention as our own military has been squeezed beyond all recognition by New Labour.

Tyrell "all of a sudden"
Don't think so, and not sure at all where you get the impression that attitudes have suddenly changed.

That's right - I mean, after Iraq how could we have had any doubt?
