BBC: The myth of counting
The economy is big news at the moment, but it isn't always easy to see whether a particular statistic is good or bad so Auntie Beeb is publishing a series of short articles to explain the mysteries of economics, statistics and basic maths to the un-enlightened.

Final sentence:

Ahh, and we get to the nub - the raison d'etre of the article - the BBC telling us the government seems to be asleep at the wheel.
No doubt next week will cover inflation and why inflation isn't really as high as we think and we should all stop complaining, start ramping property like the BBC and complain about the government not pumping taxpayers' money into the housing market.
