They are nicknames - Fannie Mae is the Federal National Mortgage Agency (or something) so the acronym is FNMA. Same thing with Freddie Mac.

The Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation ("FHLMC") NYSE: FRE, commonly known as Freddie Mac.
Mmmm, a bit of a mental leap that one!

People will buy on the assumption they have an implicit guarantee from the government. All upside and no downside.Great!

The Federal part is also a misnomer - although originally government agancies, and both originally government sponsored, but are now shareholder owned corporations, who underwrite USA mortgages. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fannie_Mae )
