Tragic indeed, and unnecessary; unlike the UK a US homeowner in negative equity can walk away from a house in foreclosure without redress (the so-called 'jingle-mail', where the keys are mailed back to the mortgage company).

As an aside, it is this lack of culpability for debt and the resulting defaulting on mortgage payments on the part of homeowners that make the taxpayer bailout in the US all the more criminal...

It is, of course, terribly tragic.
And I'm sure that Dead Spider is correct, which makes it even sadder that the lady might have thought (wrongly) that she was helping her husband and son financially.
