35% increase
times online: British Gas raises energy bills by 35%
Centrica, the owner of British Gas, said today that it is raising gas prices by 35 per cent and electricity by 9 per cent after profits at its residential business fell by 69 per cent in the first half.
The move is in response to a rise of £2 billion in market commodity prices.

Where are the protests about these horrendous price rises? Are the Brits so punch drunk on bad news that they no longer react to anything? I have just seen a sample of people interviewed on the news bulletin and they just seemed to shrug their shoulders with indifference. Maybe the average Brit is so flushed with money that they can take this sort of increase in their stride!

As I have said before : House prices have to return to affordable levels i.e. In relation to wage levels, and this is now in process. However there is another underlying problem that is rearing it's ugly head. This is the cost of living and maintaing a property.
'Owning' a property and not being able to afford all that is required to live there is not much use.
Privatising the infra-structure of a country concentrates the wealth in the hands of a few whlie the majority lose the necessities of life that belong to their Country..

Dancer7 , do not forget that we are talking 35% of small sums. From let's say £40 to £54 a month. Everything is relative. And British gas also guaranteed no further increase for 2008. On top of that, loads of British Gas customers were given the opportunity to freeze any increase for 2 years for a small monthly fee, the ones who did are the real winners, and must be more willing to celebrate their good forward thinking than go down the streets. Guess you are amongst the ones who threw away that offer with contempt straight in the bin.
