Hometrack - House Prices 1.2% Lower in July. Biggest Annual Fall on Record !!
Reuters: House prices fall in July
House prices fell for a 10th straight month in July to stand 4.4 percent lower on the year, a survey by property consultants Hometrack showed on Monday. That was the biggest annual fall since the survey began in 2001. Prices were 1.2 percent lower on the month.

There appears to be very concerted effort to shout down the Halifax figures today by talking about the National Housing Federation survey instead. In fact the BBC has desperately tried to muddy the picture by NOT reporting the Halifax figures and reporting the Land Registry more modest drop instead:

Given the "record" started in the middle of a house price bubble I wouldn't give it such significance.

I don't think it matters a great deal anymore what the BBC etc try and do. It's on the ground where the reality of the situation is occuring and the reality is that EVERY SINGLE STREET in this country has people who are suffering as the market tanks. On the TV tonight was a terrace street in Sheffield with a woman trying to downsize to shore up her pension, a house where the price has dropped 30k and still no interest, etc etc. Every street has these experiences, these people talk to their friends and neighbours. The BBC etc are simply a corporate Comical Ali.
