Law lords vote down our right to Lisbon Treaty vote

Stuart Wheeler: Unfortunately we have lost

This is extremely important to houseprices. At least at the moment, we have a Bank of England, that can set interest rates for our domestic needs. They can still be reigned in by our treasury. In Europe, Germany is starved of credit, whilst Spain is flooded in it. A central bank to rival the Federal Reserve, taking decisions for corporate needs, without reference to national requirements. The Lisbon Treaty gives precidence to European Law over British Law, effectively meaning that the Europeans could legally push us into the Euro without the consent of the British people. "- Judgement was given this morning and unfortunately we have lost, but I am thinking very hard what to do. There will be further information on the website later today."

Bizarre. The reason given was that the Lisbon Treaty was fundamentally different from the CONstitution, when any fule kno that it's the same.

I for one would love a referendum, but OTOH I am very nervous about the idea of unelected judges overriding an elected parliament, I just wish that the judges had come up with a slightly more convincing reason, like "We all know that politico's are compulsive liars who'll say anything to get into power, so don't come crying to use now".

This is not what I understand - is this more spin? - can someone point out exactly where the treaty says this?

Why in god's name can't we all just have an unbiased version of the facts?

The Lisbon Treaty is Constitutional. It gives the European Union power to alter itself without recourse to the people.

Check out this short clip, the main part is a bit in, with a speach from within the Parliament: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ulg1MkXxWa0

Jeez, you wouldn't see this much paranoia at a UFO believers conference - reading this post and the comments, unbelievable - do you all wear tin foil hats?

1) the treaty does not give europe the right to force us to join the euro? Where on earth did you get that tosh from?
2) as to tesco labelling clothes in Euros and Pounds... well that makes perfect sense. If you have a distribution hub that is handling countries in Euroland as well as UK then makes sense to have one set of labels with both currencies. Tesco operates in Ireland which has the Euro - why bother having 2 sets of labelling when you can have one with both on?

If you go to Canada you find many stores similarly have prices in US dollars as well as Canadian dollars. This doesn't mean Canada is about to ditch its own dollar - they've been doing this for years - it makes business sense.

Calm down folks stop reading the Sun and stop being so paranoid. We aren't going to have the Euro here anytime soon and it defintely won't be imposed on us without a referendum.

Blah blah
Just because Europe has low interest rates doesn't mean banks have to indulge in careless lending.
If they have done this is not the fault of the Euro or the ECB. It is the banks' own fault - they knew all along that they now have the ECB.
As for the good old BoE, I'd say its freedom to act is quite restricted.

@drewster

I think suddenly waking up to find yourself in a Marxist, undemocratic EU will have a lot to do with the 'perceived' value of your home.

8. 25 June - On 25 June judgment was given. We lost (see the judgment) and the Divisional Court refused permission to appeal to the Court of Appeal. This is not unusual and we have informed the government that we shall apply to the Court of Appeal for permission to appeal. We have asked the government for an assurance that it will not meanwhile perform the final act of ratification i.e. deposit the instruments of ratification in Rome. They have not responded.

What happens next:

- We await a decision as to whether we will be permitted to appeal.
- One more point: solicitors for the Prime Minister refused, on technical legal grounds, to produce documents which would, I feel sure, show that the only reason he is refusing a referendum is that he believes that he would lose it.

James, maybe you want to be in the United States of Europe, maybe you don't. Do you not think it strange to not have a vote on it? Just think of the change in law. No Anglo-Saxon law based on constitutional rights and precedent, its dictatorial Roman law where the government gives you rights, and the law is black and white. DISGUSTING.

Have a quick look at the Law Society web site, there is a very handy 'Lisbon' summary without scary overstatements and ridiculous misinterpretations.......see above.

Iguana, the moment that we ignore the Law Society, in favour of politicians, because the professionals present something scary, I know that we deserve despotism.

As S2R1 says, a bit more destruction please!
