increase the clarity of the tax system, and improve its relationship with big business by implementing the recommendations of the Varney Review.

It might want to improve it's relations with perceived small businesses in an awful hurry aswell. An awful hurry.

Another 'flash' appointment!
I seem to recall that one of his illustrious recent predecessors brought with him some commercial ethics and practices, namely asset stripping. Instead of concentrating on collecting the right tax at the right time, he sold off the tax offices to a 'tax haven' company. Then like the proverbial seagull he flapped off into the distance to cr@p on something else.
I do not expect that fund managing/private equity experience will be of any use in this appointment.
