Record oil prices could give Brown a popularity boost
BBC: Oil soars to new record over $135
It's probably too late for the Crewe & Nantwich but Gordon Brown could boost his rapidly fading popularity but capping the tax take on fuel. Whilst derv and petrol soars to £1.30+ per litre the government tax take increases in line. A simple and potentially cynical decision could be made to cap the tax take at for example £1.00 a litre. Increases in the cost of oil over and above the £1.00 would incur no additional tax on the punter at the pumps.
The above comments are not based directly on the BBC linked article but are based around a potential approach to address several factors, which include the distress and the impact of inflation on the motorist and an attempt to portray Brown as helping the people who he serves.

I'm sure it will be attributed to the growth in chinese and indian demand. How long will it be before the estate agents, banks and building societies will tell us that the chinese are buying up all the u.k. property?

I don't like commenting on my own blog but I missed a couple of points.
The cap on the tax take increases inline with CPI. Additional value to the capped approached is a smoothing of inflation spikes.

I'd be astounded if Gordon would implement this - he's probably loving the extra tax to fill up the holes in his spending plans. He refused to lower corporate tax in Northern Ireland even though a lower rate had been proven (in ROI) to increase overall tax take. The man is simply a grabber with no long-term vision - the perfect example is his rise to the PM role - it was obviously all about getting the job and now he doesn't seem to know what to do with it.

from main text "and an attempt to portray Brown as helping the people who he serves"
Perhaps it would help to see things more clearly if we wave goodbye to the understandable illushion that British politicians serve the British People.

Sorry denzil that was misleading - the list above is a partial list of PAST Bilderberg attendees.
No one knows who attended this year because it hasn't happened yet!
I was simply trying to make the point that we tend to blame politicians for things they have little or no control over, like running OUR country.

Isn't Peter Mandelson was a member too?
But what difference does it make who they are and whether they get together for a quiet drink and cigar from time to time?
