Newspapers and Vested Interests - The Property Section

Guardian: Regional newspapers suffer from slump in advertising

Daily Mail and General Trust warned yesterday that its regional papers were suffering, partly as a result of a lack of property advertising. The news sent shares in the group, owner of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday, to their lowest for more than 10 years.
This explains why the 'Express' are still banging on about house price increases.

I stopped buying my local rag last year (after educating myself on this site), there's no news, I only ever needed the property section. Now I comment online (local rag) and educate others about the rags vested interests. Oh yeh, they 'attempt' to block my IP every day! ha ha...Cheers HPC for highlighting the corruptness.

Yes, but the mail has been fairly bearish with regards to property.

Perhaps the Express is far more vunerable than anybody else?

I would have thought the most vulnerable were the Daily Mail, and Trinity Mirror group.

Perhaps the Wail is being more bearish because they want prices to fall quickly so people will start buying again.

Talk to anyone in media, they will tell you that advertising is the most reliable lead indicator there is of coming economic problems (advertising of all sorts - property is only one part of the ad market that is dropping).

If advertising is falling off a cliff, recession isn't far behind (6 months max). I was working in daily newspapers in through the 89-92 recession and I remember it got so bad it hit pagination quite badly: less ads means thinner newspapers.

We are in a phoney war at the moment where everyone is expecting a storm but the indicators are barely moving; by the autumn all that will change.

Actually I was in a meeting with a guy from Ogilvie and Mather AT THE END OF LAST YEAR and they had already picked up a downturn in pitches for new ad campaigns - the very campaigns that ought to be on posters and in the newspapers around now.

Your right monte - my local weekly free paper, is 99% advertisements, it will only soon become useful during the recession for the job adverts!

It will be interesting to see if Gordon & co come to the rescue - here is a bit of a clue

Get your tax return in - tax doesnt have to be taxing
Get your qtrly Vat return in by XXXX (qurterly rolling ad)
Government ad on shared equity schemes
Government ad on housing help for "key workers"
TV licence dodgers - we are coming to get you
Car Tax dodgers- Ditto

Huge ad campaign on the adverse use of alcahol on individuals health - safe number of units for men/women etc...

Actually the newspaper business has been in trouble for a few years now, especially the local papers. Their most lucrative adverts are for property, jobs, and cars. The internet siphoned off all of these - RightMove, Monster, AutoTrader. The personals columns have moved to Match.com and even the 50p small ads for old furniture or washing machines have migrated to eBay where they can be presented in glorious colour.

Take a look at the share price of Johnston Press, owners of many local newspapers around the UK. They've fallen from almost 500p to barely 100p in the last year. Darn, I wish I'd seen this credit crunch coming.....

The scale of local weekly newspaper advertising which has and still does rely heavily on the property section (and to a lesser extent motor vehicles)
is worth taking a look at because of its potential knock on effect on the economy. Here is one company's papers.

@local' media outlets have rapidly lost their independence these all belong to NewsQuest which in turn belongs to the giant Gannett a US company with ties to the CFR.

Gannett Co., Inc. is a leading international news and information company. In the United States, the company publishes 85 daily newspapers, including USA TODAY, and nearly 900 non-daily publications. Along with each of its daily newspapers, the company operates Internet sites offering news and advertising that is customized for the market served and integrated with its publishing operations. USA TODAY.com is one of the most popular news sites on the Web. The company is the largest newspaper publisher in the U.S.

Newspaper publishing operations in the United Kingdom, operating as Newsquest, include 17 paid-for daily newspapers, almost 300 non-daily publications, locally integrated Web sites and classified business Web sites with national reach. Newsquest is the second largest regional newspaper publisher in the U.K.
