times: Women win right to children without fathers

Single women and lesbian couples won landmark parental rights last night as MPs voted to remove the requirement that fertility clinics consider a child’s need for a father.
As James pointed out a few days ago most posters here are men.
However it now seems our bleetings are just that - bleetings - the future doesn't need men

I am surprised to learn that most posters on the site are men. How do you know? I have been posting and reading this site for 3 years and as an economist I have seen it as a lone voice of sanity in a frankly deranged world. I have kept my nerve and recently sold my flat to rent although I had to uproot my husband and twins but it seems we have made the right decision.

As for your post that men are no longer needed in parenting I couldn't disagree more. The reason my single friends have turned to lone parenting or IVF is because the men are not there prepared to commit to being father's and why should they since contraception has given them all the benefits of a relationship with none of the financial and emotional stress of a family? I don't blame men and women either as the reality of supporting a family has become a horror.

Many women have a biological urge to have sex in the same way men have the biological urge to have sex - how many men would agree to go through life abstaining from sex? Would you look for an artificial way of doing it? Would that make the more common way less valuable? Some women choose to have babies through artificial means, don't see it as an attack on your role in society just a reaction to a general reluctance to commit. My husband wasn't over the moon to find me pregnant with twins at only 27 but 7 years on he's more involved with their upkeep and happiness than I am. Choice is always a double edged sword.

F'all point to HPC AND not true. James was not right to be concerned. The idea that somehow because society/science is mature enough to accomodate lesbians and single women wishing to have children does not mean that men are not needed. It's a ridiculous and irrelevant idea.

drewster - I think I get it - does this mean smaller, therefore more households, therefore a boost to house prices? I'm struggling here, c'mon Fionnuala & Krusty, back me up.

Single mothers (voters) first - kids (non-voters) second.

Off-topic, but so typical, and so sad.

I just hope that these people they are 'helping' can't be bothered to get off their arses and vote at the next election - likely, I suspect??

Icarus, good point - clearly the government is desperate for any measure that might prop up house prices!

A far more cynical viewpoint is that the government wants more people to be dependent on it. If all the women are single mothers and all the men are employed by the state (or employed by banks which are repeatedly bailed out by the state), then we are all dependent on the state in one way or another. Before long you'll need an ID card to claim benefits and an ID card to work. Where's my tin-foil hat?

They will still need men..................to pay for it all.

I also wonder where they will get sperm from too if men are excluded.

Drewster, tin hats are not required for this scenario. The current incumbents are trying to phase in ID cards with biometrics. This document:
http://wikileaks.cx/leak/nis-options-analysis-outcome.pdf
gives some insight into the government's approach to ID cards.

Typical alarmist reporting. The key sentance is: "While the current law DOES NOT BLOCK such therapy, it is SOMETIMES used to justify refusals." (emphasis added). Homophibic tripe from Murdoch's minions.
