Times: New housing starts plunge by a quarter

The Department of Communities and Local Government today said the number of new house builds fell by 24.4 per cent to 32,144 in January to March on the first quarter last year, and shrank by 21.5 per cent compared to the final three months of 2007.

That's an impressive fall in housing starts! Just to put it in perspective, US housing starts fell 11.9% in the month of March alone. In the US, housing starts are now at the lowest since March 1991. No comparable figures for the UK have been released, but we can't be far behind the US.
