There's a whole host of problems in that forum. Check out this one: Letting Agent Withholding Rent and Deposit. It started out as a BTL realising there might be a problem as he hadn't received any rental payments since August 2007. If you carry on reading the thread the poor guy gets some very bad news.

A lot of commission based companies (e.g. estate agencies, recruitment consultancies etc)
withhold cash before they are about to go bust. A friend of mine renting in Dulwich told me last week his
land lord is in a pickle as the EA has gone bust and done a runner with the deposit and 2 months rent !!
