poles go home

REUTERS: Survey shows half EU immigrants to UK have left

"Four in ten of the returned Polish migrants we surveyed think that better employment prospects in Poland would encourage Poles living in the UK to return to Poland for good," it said.

And if the UK (and RoI) had followed the example of most of the other pre-accession EU member states by restricting immigration from Eastern Europe, then the housing bubble would have burst four years ago, but that wouldn't have suited the government(s), especially Bliar who needed the 'feelgood' effect of rising house prices to help him get re-elected.

Oh, well the foolish BTLs who have bought since then are going to get stung, but tough, that's capitalism.

Anecdotally, I've been told that the quality of Poles now arriving has fallen sharply. The Poles who came in 2004 were educated and hard-working but there simply weren't any jobs in Poland for them. The Poles coming here in 2008 are their chavs - the ones who are unable to get a job even in the buoyant economy in Poland. They're a lot less hard-working than the first cohort. This can't be good for Britain either!

Could their return to Poland be anything to do with exchange rates - from 7 zloty to the pound when they arrived to 4 zloty to the pound now

This could also be a bit of propaganda aimed at people considering voting BNP in the local elections, the BBC were pushing this story, there still appears to be plenty around here.

I live in London and they ARE going back. There simply aren't the same numbers here, that there were two years ago. Many of the ones who remain have a homesick look on their faces.

These people should never have been labelled immigrants in the first place - they were simply a moving workforce that never intended to stay. Exactly as we would expect to work temporarily in France, Germany or wherever.
The usual suspects pushed the 'here to stay' angle to fulfill their own agenda and of course it didn't take long for the sheeple to step up to the mark with a good old slice of Britsh 'johnny foreigner'-bashing.

I believe it because of the economics and practicalities…

1) it is easy to go back and forth, so unlike previous waves it is not a one way system
2) since December they can now work in the rest of Europe (the UK allowed them in 8 years earlier)
3) the pound I so weak that they would rather be paid in Euros (and so work there)
4) the cost of living there is lower while the UK is more expense than the rest of Europe
5) their own economies are booming and so they have more opportunities
6) our economy is diving so fewer opportunities
7) anecdotal evidence

Also, the government was wrong on how many would come, but it is probably also wrong on how many would return.
