Most bearish article I've seen in the Express yet

Daily Express: Homes now cheaper than a year ago

They've disabled comments on the article though!

Why have they disabled comments on the article?

I'm sure they will "balance" it with a similarly bullish article tomorrow. Maybe talking about price rises over the last 15 years or something.

This is all part of the Express "house prices up/house prices down routine"

jonb - maybe so but it still feels significant to me. I've not seen a remotely negative article in the Express for years - could they finally be starting to accept reality?

Witness their infamous "House Prices Still on the Rise" front page just a month or so back, based on a Rightmove survey showing a sharp drop (they based it on the annual increase of 4% or something).

jack c - I don't agree. Show me one "House Prices Down" article from the Express in the past year.

pelethar - I'll have to search out the Express articles from memory around Nov/Dec 2007 time - Little Prof even posted up the front page headlines showing the up's and downs from one headline to the next and we all had a good chuckle about it.

I kind of remember what you're referring to. If I'm remembering right, the "Down" articles were more like "Mortgage misery for millions" or "Banks refuse to pass on rate cut" ie please please give us a rate cut rather than actually saying that prices were falling. I'm still fairly sure this is the first time they have reported a price fall as a price fall.

'Tis true. I think it was three days in a row - one day headline said prices going up, net day prices going down, and then the next prices going up.
I think I have the image files somewhere.

Yeah, but the Daily Express haven't exactly given this article any prominence:

Excellent work LP - the content of the Express is now such that it should have a red top - how long before we have a headline reading "Freddie Star's hamster ate my chocolate bar"

The power of the media is fascinating. We could now easily have two front page stories on the same paper, one "good news for homeowners as house prices hit record levels" and the other "misery for homeowners as oil prices hit record levels" and people would read both and sagely nod their head in agreement.

try this?

It turns out that John Wrigglesworth made his 'Elvis' quote about three or four years ago. Heaven only knows why they are re-hashing it now.
