CBS News: Bush: U.S. on Verge of Energy Breakthrough
(AP) Saying the nation is on the verge of technological breakthroughs that would "startle" most Americans, President Bush on Monday outlined his energy proposals to help wean the country off foreign oil.
Less than half the crude oil used by refineries is produced in the United States, while 60 percent comes from foreign nations, Bush said during the first stop on a two-day trip to talk about energy.
Some of these foreign suppliers have "unstable" governments that have fundamental differences with America, he said.
"It creates a national security issue and we're held hostage for energy by foreign nations that may not like us," Bush said.

Claiming to be on the verge of a technological energy breakthrough seems like a desperate bid to frighten the markets away from pricing oil at $120/barrel.

The only thing Bush is on the ´verge of´ is going down in history as America´s worst ever president.

I thought it might be similar to the 'energy breakthrough' that Germany went through, where they hit hyperinflation and stated burning deuchmark for heat.

There have been promising developments from nanotechnology for lithium ion batteries. These batteries are already being used commercially in wheeled motor vehicles and as an energy store in naval vessels. Previously large MOW ships needed two diesel systems running. These batteries are also being used in land generating stations to store excess energy generated during off peak times. Their potential to reduce the use of oil is enormous. The Altairnano web site provides comprehensive information.

Shale fields, tar sands, etc, are as big a rape of the earth as the loss of rainforests. The land is contaminated with heavy metals after extraction. Makes me shudder.
