BBC News: Brown Defend U-turn on 10p Tax
In what will be seen as a U-turn forced by Labour rebels, the chancellor said he would assess the loss to pensioners aged 60-64 and childless people.
The compensation deal will be unveiled in the autumn and backdated to April.

I would say a step too far! You did not think that one through very well now did you! Mr B. It is very nice to see that justice does prevail sometimes. How he thought he would pull this off is unbelievable!!

Nice to see Brown showing his true Labour credentials. Gaitskell must be turning in his grave.

Just shows how arrogant the Labour government were a year ago thinking they could force this measure through without revolt, and how weak they are today having to bow to their backbenchers (and the banks!)

Not sure what you mean with the comparison to Gaitskell. Gaitskell was a genuine social democrat who had a real commitment to helping the poor through the principle of redistributive taxation. You can argue that was a flawed approach but it was a coherent philosophy and he would have viewed with contempt Brown's efforts to stitch up the poor this way. Perhaps that what you mean when you say 'turning in his grave' ? I hope so !!

The government probably think were all on £100,000 a year and everybody else is on the dole so it wouldn't effect anybody.

I'm sure that the redistribution of tax wastes a great deal of money. (eg tax credits)
How much cash is going to be wasted assesing poor couples and pensioners. Come on Gordo, or even David. One of you please announce that you are going to introduce a tax free allowance of 10-12k. Next 30-40k is taxed at 24ish%, above this 40%. Low paid workers keep their cash. We all lose the wonderful tax credits system. What a waste of money that is. Overpayments, underpayments, fraud, cost of computer system, wages, future pensions etc

Ijjhall, that's precisely what I mean.

Justwatching. If the Tories thought this through properly this type of idea could punch labour in the guts and then stove it's skull in for good!
...too much maybe...grrrrr!!!

Bravo justwatching. How much money is wasted monitoring and redistributing wealth in the complicated manner it is done now. The tax credit system just seems to be a nightmare.

Part of the whole problem with Labour though is if you took away all the petty beaucratic b*llsh*t jobs you'd have another couple of million on "incapacity benefit" (previously known as "the dole").
Dead Man Walking.
