Not too long ago, some analysts were still claiming that the financial turmoil would have scant impact on the real economy. But the effects of the credit crisis are now clearly kicking in.

how the financial system shutting down for 8 months can have no impact on a credit based economy i have no idea.
actually you would have had to search hard for any possible evidence as to why it wouldn't crunch the "real" economy (like the two are separated).

It really beggars belief that serious commentators could argue that there would not be a wider set of consequences from the housing slowdown..
