Desperate to get CPI under control
BBC News: Darling to delay fuel duty rise
Alistair Darling will delay a 2p rise in fuel duty for six months in the Budget, the BBC has learned.
The rise, announced in last year's Budget, had been due to come into effect on 1 April but will be postponed due to soaring crude oil prices.
According to the Office of National Statistics, fuel inflation is the highest since records began in January 1997.

why do they even need to have such a high fuel tax... it is crippling the UK...

They desparately need it to fill the hole left by reduced income from land stamp duty tax, VAT from retail etc etc.

Darling is hedging his bets on oil prices falling within the next six months - and the petrol companies passing on such a fall (if it happens) to motorists.
