BBC: Darling puts car and drink tax up

As far as I can make out, no tax attack on Second Homes.

Big increases in duty on alcohol and high-polluting cars have been announced by Chancellor Alistair Darling.

In his first Budget he put 4p on a pint of beer, 14p on a bottle of wine and 55p on a bottle of spirits. Duty on a packet of cigarettes is up 11p.

From the state media news website:

• From April, key workers, such as teachers and nurses, will be able to borrow money from shared equity schemes.
• Stamp duty on shared ownership homes will not be required until people own 80% of their home.
• More people should have the chance to have a long-term fixed mortgage, which a report shows can reduce the risks for first-time buyers and can keep them on the housing ladder.
• Sites for 70,000 more houses have been identified.

in other words:

• Party members such as our esteemed and hardworking public services employees will be able to borrow more money against property ponzi schemes
• People will be encouraged to reduce their living space with delayed tax incentives (not reductions). This will prolong our crucial housing boom (maybe)
• We will try to force banks to offer lower priced mortgages. We don't know if any of them will like the idea or whether they'll just use it to charge a higher rate over the life of the loan, but it sounds good.
• We have identified sites for new homes. We're just not sure who is going to build or buy them.

I think Alistair Darling must live in one of these parallel universes if he believes that the economy is sound and employment at record levels. What a boring speaker though.

Did anyone else notice all the Brown phrases, Mr deputy speaker? "But I can do more..."

Cameron subsequently made some very valid points - he must be a regular visitor to this site because he actually accused the chancellor and prime minister of living "in an entirely different world from everybody else".

Ken Clarke also interviewed on radio 4 stated that the levels of personal debt in the UK are massive in proprtion to other economies and that such levels are unsustainable

why don't they legalise prostitution?? I was reading on the web, by doing this could raise around £800,000,000 in tax per year, they claim that there are around 100,000 girls earning approx 50k per year and not paying tax....

Imagine what they could do with that money!! buy another bank maybe..lol

Smell the bull; "Mr Darling said inflation would rise before returning to its 2% target in 2009 and remain on target thereafter".

Remember, no matter how hard you polish it you cannot put a shine on a turd!

Great idea --------------You spotted a potentially huge scource of indirect tax. However I think the accounts would show the money will have originated largely from government expenses and we couldn't possibly have that.

Don't we just love the Truth ?

Nice response from Nick Clegg MP; "What we have seen today is an act of political ventriloquism, I would like to compliment the Prime Minister: I watched him very closely, his lips barely moved all the while the Chancellor was speaking."

Priceless.

Darling cut growth and increased borrowing again.

UK PLC is looking even more vulnerable (not sustainable).

Pretty pathetic overall, although I thought Cameron's reply was superb (despite the fact that I'm not a great Cameron fan)

Rest assured that Darling's rather optimistic forecasts will come home to haunt him!

UT, annoyingly I don't think he'll be in the job long enough to be haunted by anything! He looks to me like a rabbit-in-the-headlights not knowing which way to turn (much like the rest of this dire cabinet).

The elephant in the room here is that he is "predicting" that inflation will rise in the short term and drop in a bit, i.e. is letting BOE drop interest rates. He is here setting BOE policy that we will have high inflation for a yr or so and that it will be reigned in post election. Well, the Tories did that overtly when they had direct control over interest rates, so this is a bad play on politicians in general rather than something that benefits the Tories.
