Look at the headline - in a world where views are conditioned by the Daily Mail, the Murdoch media etc., I can guarantee that both the intention of the headline and the reaction to it are righteous indignation at the unemployed scrounging scum, asylum seekers etc. etc, you know the story.
But wait and think for a second - do these figures include mothers looking after children? Do they include people taking early retirement? Puts a slightly different spin on the headline, doesn't it?
In my opinion a society where 75+% of men and women (of a working age) are working is a society that is doomed to failure economically, socially and in terms of culture, mental health and anything else you care to mention.
The biggest reason Britain is the way it is at the moment is people's failure to think and challenge the status quo - just how the Government like it.

Good point shipbuilder.
But I would assume the figures are based on people actually registering in some way. This would exclude, for example, mothers who are not looking for employment because they have a husband or partner financially supporting them.

I think the term economically inactive would include non working parents supported by their partners.
If so, my wife is classed as economically inactive. She got sick of working at a local authority where she had to be polite to moronic local residents complaining about everything all day. And good luck to her.
