If you lose money selling couches and chairs, how can you pay your investors a hefty dividend? You play the markets.
CNN: Furniture company - or hedge fund?
Now we have DFS, CSL and Land of Leather in the UK who are so reliant on the housing market. I wonder how this will play out....?

This is all very reminiscent of the Japanese bubble in the 80's. There was a joke then that went: "How many Japanese does it take to run a car company?" The answer was "Three. One to make it, one to sell it and one to trade the long bond."

This is a perfect illustration of how the western economies are just one big investment portfolio/hedge fund/gamble, whatever you want to call it.
Nothing is produced, no value is added, money is made by multiplying virtual cash (created from nowhere, remember) through financial instruments.
God help us.
