High house prices and a rubbish standard of living - thanks NuLabour!

Telegraph: Biggest brain drain from UK in 50 years

No other nation is losing so many qualified people, it points out. Britain has now lost more than one in 10 of its most skilled citizens, while overall only Mexico has had more people emigrate.

As usual with most papers, the start of the piece is not backed up if you read deeper.

"Record numbers of Britons are leaving - many of them doctors, teachers and engineers "

Later on, it states that 28.5% of the emigrates were scientists or engineers.

But, 37.7 per cent had humanities or social science degrees, hmmmmmmmm!

A lot of people who I know - with a lot of expertise - are leaving the country, to mainly go to the US.

I also know a few guys who have come to the UK from India....a number of these guys just see the UK as a stepping stone to the US.

The people who are leaving appear to be educated, thinking people. At the moment, there is no way educated, professional people can prosper in the UK. Only the 'brown nose' yes-men prosper - those who are prepared to toe the line and do what they are told - not what is right.

Teachers, doctors, police etc are increasingly not being trusted to make any professional judgements. Everything has to be recorded and centrally controlled - by people who may mean well, but who, in the majority of cases, just don't have a clue. Even the thinking politicians have all been removed from office by our control freak PM.

Until we get a change at the top, this will only get worse.

I have dual nationality, British and Australian. I was in Oz for about 4 years up to April 2007, My Girlfriend and I left to go travelling and to move back to the UK because she want's to be near her family (she is British). We are seriously considering moving back. Monumental house prices are just point blank ridulous. Why? Its cold, wet and cramped, huge traffic jams etc... I love the mountains of Scotland and Wales but that is about it!

Even though House prices are pretty high in Australia, I can still see value in the properties, they are generally bespoke designs, with plenty of space and gardens to enjoy the weather. Here all you get are monotonous brick boxes that look just like your neighbours, and your neighbours neighbours. And if you are unlucky, they will even pebble dash it!!! what is that stuff?

Saying that Australia's property bubble will burst properly in 09 when the high IR's take hold (7.25% and still going up). I think I have just talked myself into it...I'm off!

I'm an engineer by the way, and I could get a job in a jiffy If I moved back. Saying that there seems to be a lot of work in my field here as well but not in the places I want to live (i.e brick boxes and traffic jams), its all about the quality of life. My mate has just got an interview with the Australian Immigration Dep. They are conducting interviews all over the UK over the next 2 months trying to recruit health care workers to Queensland. If you are an OT, Nurse etc.... now is your chance to get out!

I am an engineer too and, having moved back from Sweden, would seriously consider a permanent move abroad. Plenty of jobs for engineers in a valued career sector, at least in Sweden. I agree with SYMO. We need to start cutting metal and out of the financial wizzardry that is causing all these problems at the moment. For a country that gave the world the steam engine, jet engine, etc we seem to have lost our way.......

I am an engineer too with 3 yrs post grad experience, a misters degree and currently working towards my PhD. My friends mother was once astonished that I had been to 6th form and wanted to be an engineer, she thought it a waste of an education and I think see holds the majority view for people who live in this country don't know what work engineers do. After my degree I will be emigrating - Australia or the US - who knows. Can anyone tell me what the typical employment conditions are like in these 2 countries (i.e. hols, pay, health care etc.)

Daddy still tells you to buy, past form m8.Lots of people warned us . Nobody listened. . My point is most people in the uk will not be missed , im worth £20 an hour bull, for doing what. The spanish brain drain are on their way back home as they all had their houses knocked down,.They teach this mortgage stuff at schools, come on they are all brought up with it .Let the melons go buy inflated houses all over the world. should i stand for mp as mrknowbody, then instead of wasting your vote , you really can vote no body. ANGER OR APATHY , the choice is yours.

Prof Christian Dustmann, of University College London, said: "The costs of leaving a country are substantial. The rewards must be very high."

Of course they are in the right Country. You can afford housing, heating and food without going into debt!

I am a scientist. Worked for a UK start-up biotech company for 5 years, help grow it from 4 employees as head of science, company was sold to an US corporation 2 years ago.
Production was moved to California within months and then shut company in UK with loss of almost 30 jobs. Been unemployed since, but still pay taxes and no benefits,
cannot even afford a studio flat in my native westcountry.
In process of moving to Canada as prospect of start-up nanotech company in UK is a waste of time...although if I was an artist there would likely be an nice fat grant to roll in.
Government sponsored start-ups are pretty much fumbled and forced to handshake with business angels from the start (like dragons den) with loss of value to the origianl entrepreneur.
This will be my second time abroad (first time 5 US patents saved $200million/year division of US Fortune company) and with this chance very unlikely to come back to UK.
Not so much draining as flying.

Quite agree uncle chris. I feel more and more like our politicians (even the CofE!) our deliberately trying to destroy our culture, so much so that many Commonwealth countries are now more British than we are.

I totally agree and I don't see things improving either, I think we're almost at tipping point where the very people that could help improve the country will have already left.

I'm a supporter of controlled immigration and support an English test. If your English is poor (like mine;D), then to honour your new found British residency you must sign up to improve your English. I love multicultural societies, and NZ and OZ are hugely multicultural but there is definitely an onus on the immigrant to integrate and contribute. Common sense really.

But let’s stick to topic, Britain is not value for money anymore, the rest of the developed world offers a much better standard of living.

Jack C, Its beautiful, make sure you head to the Sunshine coast and the rainforests just inland (my favourite). The biggest drawback is its a long way from Europe and my experience is that you always end up where your lady is from. Good luck to all!

Britain is not all bad, but ironically I often find you have to leave somewhere to appreciate it.

Our plan is to move in two years time if house prices by then don't represent value in this country. I very much agree with geed regarding the quality of life in Britain, there are some lovely lovely places in the uk but you'd have to work yourself to an early grave to live there. For us, we just want a simple life in a nice society that is based on respect of one another. UK society at large is getting worse by the year, this is as big a factor for us to move as the house price to earning ratio of current.

I travelled all over Australia for 6 months about 7 yrs ago, I loved it but did miss the UK mainly due to the little things - one thing was that OZ tv was really bad and corny - but since 7 years ago the UK is probably far worse now! The people are more brash, upfront and arrogant as a VERY general rule than us timid UK folk, but I did find Western Oz people the most like us. The country is beautiful and the standard of living is in a different league to the uk. If things here are as bad as I think they will be here in 2 yrs then we won't think twice about moving to Perth and starting a family. Oh, and we would fully dive into the oz way of living and integrate - it would be hard who to support in the rugby though OZ v Wales !!

Only a racist would criticise immigration and then plan to be an immigrant in another country. The indigenous populations of NZ and OZ are treated badly but I guess that doesn't matter to you - this is all about greed, we are victims of our own stupidity and have played right into the banks and Brown's hands.
Didn't see so many of you moaning when you were buying second homes in France.

George Waldon (ex-Tory ministor from Thatcher times) wrote an intelligent and easy to read book discussing the pro's and con's of emigrating called "Time to Emigrate". My interpretation of his conclusion was that if you have skills and can find a place you like, then go. It could come across as a little racist (espcially to those frightened into being proud of their britishness) as he a spends a lot of time discussing the problems of immigration, particularly from the muslim commuinity. But on the whole it is a worthwhile read, and a lot better argued than this article.

Sorry guys, but yes, UK is expensive, but we are at the top of the economic cycle after 10yrs of full employment, damn it! This always happens every once in a while, happened 1991. Other places are the same, America if you aren't uber rich and can't afford medical care, Europe if you, like the many 10%+ unemployed in France or Germany (or some of the employed who can't shop around for jobs) aren't living too well. All this stuff about multi-culturalism is bulls*@t. I love living in London where, I can pop out for an African meal one night, went to a see a Serbian band play a gig last night, gonna pop to my local Portugese deli and Italian bakery on Sat morning, may pop to Brixton for a bit of Reggae on Sat night and there is a very lively english folk roots scene in London, where I go to see people singing traditional english folk songs and playing traditional british instruments. I love working with Africans, Asians, Antipodeans. I reckon a lot of these rants are simply people expressing insecurities, coz if you were all secure, you would be living and discovering british culture (and I mean real culture, like learning the fiddle and english folk songs, any of you know any? You probably think that brit pop idol is british culture), because look at the Irish abroad, look at all the communities who come here, their culture thrives in a diverse environment. Arguably, our culture has died because we don't expose it to other influences and don't have other experiences against which to frame it.

If you live in a freaking cul-de-sac in characterless suburbia, don't expect to find a lively native culture. The only places with british culture alive, are within our diverse cities, like London, Bristol, etc. or within rural communities. The imbetween bits are just part of the global consumer society. If you want to have something traditional, then you have to choose where you live and should choose an environment that is conducive to community and culture. You certainly won't find it in bloody Australia! The Aussies come here because they want to experience some kind of meaningful culture!
