The first of many tax rises I suspect - Council Tax to rise by 5%
BBC: Council tax 'set to rise by 4%
I suspect that this will be first tax rise of many. Council taxes will now rise by 5%. Have a look at how your council spends your money. You will probably find that a massive amount (30%) will be spent on their inflation proofed index linked council pensions. Next increase is fuel tax - this also goes up in April. It's a booming economy - booming taxes, booming food prices, booming fuel prices - more economic miracles from Gordon!

How can Gordon Brown tell the public sector to keep pay to under 2% with the usual jaw-twitch and at the same time do nothing about local Government? He should be pouring his sanctimony on the councils and capping their expenditure increase to no more than 2%! Makes me laugh, and even more convinced that ideas are totally exhausted at no 10 and 11.

Do not put too much blame on local government. Most of local government funding comes from central government (I think 70-80%), not council tax. The government has been reducing its funding to councils, forcing them to raise council tax to compensate. For every 1% reduction in central government funding to councils, councils must increase council tax by 3-4% to balance the books. Its a classic case of GB actually raising taxes, but shifting the blame onto councils and then acting like the saviour coming to the rescue by thretning to freeze council tax if local government do not do (the impossible) and restrict council tax rises.......

There is no lollipop at my local school. The council can't afford to fill the vacancy. Parents or other staff members are not allowed to carry out lollipop duties as they are not covered by insurance. What a mess!

The BBC is reporting this as "above the rate of inflation", when it is patently just the effect of the real rate of inflation on local services. How long can they carry on with the pretence of the CPI figure?

I know of a few small businesses in my area that say they will close because of this, they cant afford to pay any more rates....

Funny how the council cant afford things yet they manage to employ more managers on daft money to do what??? it is like the NHS....

An example of the usual story when a left-wing goverment is in power more than a few years. Tax, tax, tax and spend, spend, spend. A huge over -bloated public sector is created which is un-sustainable in the long-term starts to collapse under it's own weight.
Our economy can't currently pay to maintain the sector, let alone add additionial services in the future.
