HRMC has secret unit to calculate MP tax bill!
Telegraph: Online tax system 'too risky' for the famous
Listening to Radio 4 today one expert said that HMRC had added a extra digit to the tax code of MP's so that their returns could be screened out and sent to a special department. This is why they cannot file on line i.e it is nothing to do with security. This sounds like one rule for us and one for them. Why can't HRMC use the same department that mucks up out tax returns, to also muck up the MP's tax returns? Or is the truth more serious i.e. one tax rule for us and another more lax tax for the MP's. Is this why they enter parliment broke and then leave rich? This stinks!

Possible alternative reason - HMRC want special attention paid to MPs returns because they cannot afford for those returns to be screwed up, delayed, mis-calculated etc. When you hear some of the horror stories that people have regarding their tax imagine if that were to happen to one or more MPs returns. They might feel like a normal person!!! Argh, the horror! If you ask me MPs SHOULD ALWAYS be treated the same as the rest of us (as much as possible) because otherwise how on earth are they supposed to understand how we all live. It's about time the tide turned in this country.

And they'll never need ID theft insurance, or have the associated problems of a gov dept losing their data! So ID cards would be easy to vote through too.

It's even worse in the states. The credit reference companies (Experian, Equifax, etc.) have special monitoring systems to protect VIPs from identity theft. This was instituted after a string of high-profile identify theft cases: Tiger Woods, Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Will Smith, and others. You're quite right, it's one rule for them and another rule for us!

That's why whenever they mess up on your records you should come down on them like a ton of bricks with the Data Protection Act 1998.

what i would like to know, are MPS on a PAYE tax code, no way should they be doing returns because they are self employed employees. The tax law is quite clear, if you cannot sub your work out and have one customer you are emplyed PAYE, I have a strong suspicion MPS are on a self emplyed tax code, again another rule for them and another for us
