One Word she means and not mentioned -------------------------------- TAX !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A prime sector to raise some income, BTL forced to stay and cant sell, who will complaine about these stealing gready ( in the public eyes that is ) Landlords, they would get about as much sympathy as an estate agent, Gordon needs the money from somewhere and i have always thougt its just a matter of time before BTL was taxed

It just shows "joined-up thinking" the kind we've come to expect from Government. I'm no fan of BTLers or their accomplices, but you have to wonder what on earth the Government are doing. Having destroyed farming in the UK, lets now attack our new property-owning nation. I smell stealth taxation with more money-yielding hoops.

"The government said it would consider its recommendations to see what else can be done to improve the sector for both landlords and tenants."

The article does mention tenants' responsibilities too. It will be interesting to see what recommendations are finally made.

The government has commisioned some economists to produce a report; it will be ready by October (2008). By October the housing situation will be far worse, BTLs will be panicking, so the report will be quietly buried. Shame.

"On the other hand, it also found that landlords face problems with poor tenants not paying rent and displaying anti-social behaviour."

This sort of behaviour.................. NEEDS TO BE ENCOURAGED HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!! (JOKER LAUGH - RIP HEATH )

I smell another Labour 'initiative'. It goes like this:

Government legalised protection racket - Need cash urgently (look around for someone to tax)
Look at focus groups to find out who's unpopular - BTL investors.
Ascertain how much they matter purely in voting terms. (At this point either quash the idea or continue)
If enough people hate them then set up a Tzar-led talking shop/quango to do a 'study' and have a 'sensible debate'.
Hose millions of taxpayer pounds at your mates who all run these quangos.
Realise their recommendations will knock a few percent off your popularity.
Bury report but get the Quango to have an 'ongoing assessment' into the issues raised by the first report.

In short nothing will hapopen but millions will be wasted.

Much like Teenage Pregancy Reduction, School Dinners, Truancy, Respect Agenda, ASBOs, etc, etc....ad nauseam.

Agree with tyrrelcorporation , but the whole question of renting needs a cool disinterested appraisal. Research by Prof Andrew Oswald proves pretty conclusively that countries with high rates of owner occupation also have high rates of unemployment .You don't have to be a research economist to work out why: people on leases can up sticks and move for work but owner-occupiers have to wait round for their places to sell. If they ever do. The industrial heyday of this country was all based on renting. Owner occupation looks like a medievalist throwback, in some lights.

This is a list of problems associated with poor parenting skills. I think the housing problem may be a result of poor government skills. :-)

But, Tyrell, I love your cynicism! You're really funny, but it's scary that your insights are so feasible.

Thanks Su :)

If only alot of this crap wasn't happening though! IMHO Governement waste is a scandal that's been totally overlooked as everyone (mostly) has been duped into feeling wealthy for too long. GB bangs on about the UK being able to weather the storm but I just don't share his false optimism.

I'm with you on the government waste issue, but I feel powerless to do anything about it. Got any suggestions? :-)

my suggestion is that we change MP pension from gold plated inflation proofed final salary schemes to money purcase. They will then have to live in the real world and worry about the cost of things like the rest of us.

Well this is one government measure, probably the only one, that this site approves off!

Sounds like a good idea, but how do we implement it? No point in signing petitions and handing them into our local MPs or Downing St, I suppose. :-)

We need to send our MP a letter telling them that we are watching if they vote for a pay rise and also saying that we want them to vote to a change in there pensions. If they don't listen then we vote for parties such as the monster raving loonies or similar. This will finally get them to realise that we can not longer be taken for granted. Any other ideas on how to force it through are gratefully received.
