Brown was never competent....just lucky
BBC: UK borrowing is worst in 10 years
''For the year to December, net borrowing reached £43.6bn, £11.4bn more than the year before and higher than the Treasury's 2008 spending targets. Economists now expect the government to miss its targets this year as slower economic growth brings in lower taxes.''

Economic miracle to economic collapse - can't see Gordo serving an elected term at the rate the bad news is pouring in - unless of course the Labour party lose some of the ballet box papers like they seem to lose lots of other confidential information.

Hmmmm - this country is in worse shape than I ever could have imagined just a year ago. Exacebating the problem is a government in complete denial (a bit like 'standards are rising in schools ... honest' line) about how bad things are. They need to be making massive cuts in spending (or tax rises), but I suspect the traitor Brown will try to maintain his grand attempt at deception until the next election - at our expense I might add .... just like Northern Rock.

Makes you wonder why the other political parties don't rip Brown to shreds on the debt issue? I've barely heard them mention it.

I just can't see Labour winning the next election. I think many agreed that at the time Gordon decided not to call a snap election that was actually his best opportunity cos we knew what was around the corner and lo and behold with each passing day the storm clouds get darker and darker. Think back six months to how bad things appeared just before the run on Northern Rock, people here were discussing all sorts of angles as to how bad things could get - the 'doom-sayers'. Now the mainstream media is full of exactly the same discussions. Funnily enough though, I don't get the sense that anyone (here or in the media) has a real handle on how bad it's actually going to get. Northern Rock is such a desperate situation and so obviously highlights how incompetant Liebour really are that I think most people are now thinking this situation is going to be historic.
