Times: Apocalypse, wow! I can’t wait for the economic meltdown

Obviously the main benefit of a recession is that houses will become affordable again – rather than being, as they are at the moment, a commodity only slightly less luxurious than mink kitchen roll. I know people who are excited by escalating house prices. Why do these people enjoy the “fact” that their house is now worth £300,000 more than they paid for it? "Because if we wanted to down-scale to the countryside, we could live like kings” they chortle. Yeah, but that’s a terrible rationale. We shouldn’t be financially strangling a whole generation on the off-chance that a few people might want to leave Clapham to open a kiln in Leicestershire.

Brilliant writing which I cannot read without feeling great empathy! Free and easy but sharply to the point. UK is OK as long as essays of this quality are still around. Incidentally I am still using thermo flask (containing columbia coffee) whenever I travel by trains. Why should I spend 1 pound 60 pence for that tasteless stuff available from the trolley?! The sight of typically middle-aged country women sharing tea from the thermo with scones on the train was certainly one of the most heartwarming British scenes, which was not uncommon at least in the last century, when 'thermo' was a general noun. So people are buying fashionable CAFE LATTE for as much as THREE quids these days!. Unbelievable. I totally agree that the coming economic event presumed to be of a galactic magnitude is after all a necessary process to bring this nation to her sences.
