BBC: German exports surge despite euro

Well, at least this is comforting news. Personally always being a euro sceptic, I can see us merged into the EU, with our "hands-tied, gagged, and with a token hood provided "(which now would not be a bad thing). New Labour will have us all entering this Union with a begging bowl and a cardboard box (maybe this was the plan all along as us Brits are a stubborn lot). Anway, as they say, "safety in numbers".

With a UK economys boom and bust being driven by inflating house prices (as it always has), the last thing the UK needs is interest rate policy driven by true economic indicators rather than political objectives. It makes you wonder why the Eurosceptic arguement is fuelled when it suits us, and not when it doesn't. One need only look at the difference in policy between ECB and BofE with the last rate changes. ECB = hold, BofE = lets cut rates, have a merry Christmas and see what happens hoping for happier times in the spring. Interesting interview on R4 today: David Camerons ideas about social responsibility and mortgage lenders. I did have a few laughs on the way in to work. I agree with him that decisions about lending might not have been very "prudent" but he dropped short of saying they were negligent. And to stop it happening again, you need legislation (sadly). PS, I'm not a lawyer!

I always thought is was daft for Gordon Brown to crow about the UK's economic performance compared to Germany. Luckily the English have a better sense of humour, which will be the most useful asset in the years ahead.
