New York Times, Nov 1993: Pyramid Scheme a trap for many Romanians

"Early investors got rich and spent on luxuries like washing machines, holidays etc.
The scheme crashed. Speculation mounted that the govt printed money to keep scheme afloat, but inflation stopped them.
The sudden gold rush of money had caused house prices to triple".... Voila!
