the £4 pint has arrived
Guardian Unlimited: Price of a pint could rise 60%
Apparently the bad weather has caused an increase in the price of hops. Yeah right.

I will continue to drink French wine from over the river anyway...
It is difficult to find French Wine above 4.5 times the price of that pint = £18.00. Go and try and find some Bordeaux. Select one for £18.00 in the Intermarche at Lille ( on the Eurostar Route from Waterloo ( now St Pancras?)) but don't go to Calais becasue they rip the Brits off.
Then try it and come back to say either Aussie wine or Brit Beer is better. But remember to take the cork out and leave the bottle to stand for 2 plus hours.
Well done Gordon, another stealth tax you won't be able to collect.....

Red wine from Lidl isn't bad but you have to leave it uncorked for about a week otherwise it'll strip the enamel from your teeth in just under a minute!

Good grief - £1.79 a pint in local Wetherspoons. You can get a burger and pint for £4.50!! Somebody needs to re-do their costings! (OK - £1.79 was only for the Noverber beer festival - but full price is still under 2 quid.)

All grain-based food prices were expected to rise this year, they'll stay high for a couple more years because worldwide reserves are seriously depleted. Expect bread to go up sharply soon.

The main ingrediants for beer are water and wort, the latter is the sugar washed from cracked grains of 2-row or 6-row barley. Hops are used for flavour and for aroma - they are not a major ingredient compared to the amount of water and wort. I smell a rat here. S&N use synthetic flavourings in the majority of their [Euro-slush] beers. I reckon this is an attempt to put up prices to increase return on investment - sod all to do with a poor hop harvest.

Not sure if the 18£ pint ref is real....I now live in France and 8Euro is considered as starting to stretch it for a good bottle in a supermarket ! I visited UK this Summer and could not believe the prices and even more that people seemed to be happy enough to pay them. Reality is that joe public is taxed to the hilt in the UK to compensate for the lack of real productivity. For the past few years Ive been baffled and a bit jealous of the apparent UK boom; now that I see that 40% of UK GDP is from Finance, with the credit bust crashing the only support the economy has really had, I fear a drop of 50% in UK house prices next year and even worse very dire social conditions. I calculate a drop of 30% in France when you factor out the boom from inflation; French banks cant lend like UK ones (maximum of 30% of net salary for a mortgage), yet people are stretched to the hilt and prices are now dropping.
