The failure of England to qualify for Euro 2008 could hit economy

BBC: England failure 'may hit economy'

Phew, I was getting really concerned that a slowdown may be something to do with financial mismanagement and lack of House Price Inflation and associated MEWing but the good old BEEB have eased my worries by saying that a slowdown is do with the nation not buying England kit and merchandise. Thanks heavens.

The article is not suggesting that that England's failure last night will make the economy shrink, just that some sectors of the economy will suffer. (And that some may benefit).

A very sad state of UK economic affairs when you start continually relying upon football shirt sales and people spending money down the pub as an essential part of your economy – bring back manufacturing, exporting and real jobs !!.

Of course the economy will suffer. The Chinese economy. They're the ones who actually make all the shirts, the Union Jack flags, and the fireworks.

Alan, as soon as I posted my message I knew I’d made an oversight as we really still have lots of manufacturing in the UK e.g. Ten year economic miracle manufactured by Gordo, manufactured figures to suit latest CPI/RPI, manufactured House Price inflation by granting unaffordable mortgages to people on a self cert basis – blimey the list is endless. I’m now off to the pub wearing my full England kit to see if I can get a pint of McEwans “EXPORT” to help keep this economy rolling… damn can’t find my rose tinted spectacles.

But seriously folks... the spirit of the nation can be lifted by sporting success, so the absence thereof must have the opposite effect. People now joke about 1966, but I saw that match on TV, as a lad, and I can assure you that the effect lasted for years and years. It’s not only the sale of shirts (you couldn’t buy the England shirt in those days), it’s the fact that people will feel better about themselves, proud to be British, more optimistic about the future, happy to go about their otherwise mundane existence with a skip in their step. Without that list, the economic woes will feel a lot worse…

Proud to be British?

Muslim slaughtering, oil stealing, dictatorship supporting, police state.

Oh - if only we could win a game of football, I'd have something to be proud of.
