Official data on inflation is now irrelevant - Official Interest Rates are now irrelevant. Market fundamentals have detached from the official monetary policy

telegraph: Commuters facing 14pc rail fares rise

Rail passengers will be hit by fare increases of up to seven times the current rate of inflation in the new year. Some commuters face rises of up to 14 per cent when train companies bring in the rises in early January, while the average rise will be 6.8 per cent.

Heard this on the radio this morning. It is disgusting. The train companies rape their passengers, pocket the cash and deliver no service.

The trouble is that each franchise, once secured is a monopoly. If there was competition between different operators on the same tracks we would see lower fares and better service to attract passengers.

As it is, they bid whatever they can to get the franchise, get subsidised by the government and then screw commuters. (general lack of UK infrastructure notwithstanding)

The worst is that this isn't just yearly. We had major increases in prices just a few months back. Seems to be 15-20% rises every 6 months now. Tell me why I should get out of my car and onto public transport?

But it's OK, as inflation's only running at 2.1%!!!!!

How much longer can this go on before the real figures emerge. We've had ten years of lies. Time for the truth to come out me thinks.
