The fact that house prices have gone up is completely obvious to anyone who is still breathing, but it is questionable whether high prices are directly responsible for high waiting lists for 2 reasons:
1. most people on council waiting lists would never even contemplate buying a house on the open market in London.
2. council house waiting lists have gone up the most in the cheapest borough (Barking and Dagenham).
The real reason waiting lists are high is because of population growth (immigration and increased birth rate) and lack of supply because most of the council flats have been sold off.

they have to build more council flats, which should be absolutely ok if you look at the amount of cr@p that could be demolished and redeveloped here in london. this is a crisis caused by inept government at central and local levels.

The lists would be a lot longer if people thought they actually stood a chance of getting a house. I'm not on my council's list, nor are any of my friends (most of whom either rent privately or live with parents). The only people on the council waiting lists are those who are truly desperate, and it's very worrying that their numbers are increasing!
