The Financial Times reports that Lahde Capital, a California hedge fund, is the latest firm to be identified in the small group of US funds which have made the single most profitable trade ever by using derivatives to short subprime-linked securities.

Indeed, seems a bit rich. Where are these special betting shops? Everyone on this site has been waffling on for ages and I bet nobody even has tuppence down ( excluding sell to rent ). Or do we just sell our hard earned paper money for Johnny Foreigner I.O.U.s instead?

stillthinking: I certainly have shorted the market in the past and present. I use igindex and finspread. Selling a spread bet on a stock/index is more or less equivalent of shorting that stock/index. Watch out for volatility though, as your position may get wiped out even if the general trend is in the direction you desire. Also, your money is highly leveraged, so not for the faint of heart (or for money that you cannot afford to lose.)
