Time for a Land Value Tax?
Guardian: Time for a Land Value Tax?
A good article from the Guardian outling how a land value tax could resolve many of the problems with the housing market. I have started a discussion on this topic. http://www.housepricecrash.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=58596

I don't understand why land or houses should be taxed. I much prefer Maggie's old idea of the Community Charge (Poll Tax) where each adult pays the same amount of tax. Why should young adults who stay with their parents be exempt from paying their contribution to the community. Income Tax already takes from the rich to give to the poor.
If you tax the value of the land, those living in flats would pay a heck of a lot less than those in bungalows. Wouldn't this drive the low-paid workers into slums (sorry, flats) while penalising the elderly in their bungalows?

Really badly researched article. There is already a tax on housing land value in the UK, it is VAT, levied at a rate of 0%. The majority of the rest of Europe have a positive rate. In addition the introduction of another type of tax in addition to one already in place would upset the EU governing body in a big way.
