guardian: Tesco considers estate agency launch
The EAs and VIs that put paid to Tescos perfectly legitimate private sale business could well regret it if Tesco decide to actually take them on at their own game.

It will be interesting to see how much Tesco will charge (possibly more than the original £199) and how this will compare with EAs. I wonder if this will lead to EAs reducing their fees or whether many will just pack up shop and go into some other business.

Su - your words sloshed around in my head for a moment, along with an image of Tesco, and came back as "many will go out of business and just pack other people's shopping at Tesco..."

Watch out for "buy one get one free" on executive city flats in a year or so's time

What the hell are EAs going to do if they can't fleece the public in this way? All the car dealerships are cutting back sales guys too. Plenty of shiny grey suits and thick pink ties hitting EBAY very soon!

The only rational reason for entering the estate market now, which is already saturated, would be if one was expecting an increase in volume after the recent shrinkage. So maybe this could be seen as a vote from Tesco that there will be an increased number of very price conscious sales in the future.

I agree still thinking. The EAs have a big problem if someone facilitates house sales that is a) cheap and b) reputable.
At least if Tesco did private sales there would always be some people that couldn't be bothered doing it themselves, but now that those clever EAs have forced Tesco to actually be estate agents they've really blown it.
We even have our very own private sales website here in the channel islands now:
www.guernseypropertyhub.co.uk
Looks good, but a bit of a pathetic turnout. There are only 2 properties and only one of them has pictures!! Good luck to em though - we don't have tescos over here, so hopefully they wont get stiffed in the same way.

Tescos want to get into it for the same reasons that they sell petrol, clothes and insurance - it gives them a chance to make even more money. But with Tesco famously being able to live with 3-4% profit margins the chances for undercutting the opposition will be phenomenal.

but didnt the "black horse agencies" get in at the top of the market in the 90s and live to regret it as transactions dried up?
