Quote of the day:

"Gosh! He's quick isn't he? I bet he is really proud of the NVQ in accounting he got from night school at his local technical college. This gormless prat is the chancellor? God help us!"

- Andy King, Birmingham England

I think implying that he HAS an NVQ in accounting is an insult to all those who have one !

Unbelievable!

New Liebor were happy enough for this "irresponsible lending" when it was keeping the econmy booming and house prices rising. They're as much to blame as those "bad" banks and building societies.

How quickly they change their minds when it suits them.

Looks like Joe Public, got the government all worked out...going by them comments.

The chancellor is apparently an extremely clever man, so why has he bocome Browns bitch? Why would he agree to manage Browns failing finances?

It's like...taking the reins of the Englands managers job, after Russia beats Isreal. No fool would be willing to do that, remember footballers aren't known for their acedemic skills.

BTW, breakfast TV this morning reckoned that England not qualifying for Euro 2008 could cost the economy £1.5Bn in lost sales of stuff.

This is the inherent weakness of democracy, as the character of society declines so does that of it's politicians, you then end up with a bunch of social misfits running the country with no experience of real life and couldn't even run a whelk stall between them. But what options are you left with but to vote for another bunch of social misfits who will do the same.

I so agree with you! But it also works the other way round too. So it becomes a vicious circle. Historically it has taken a major Christian revival to overturn such a decline.

Um... doesn't stopping banks from lending 'stupidly' leave all the people that have already borrowed 'stupidly' stuck on their 'now-no-longer-quite-so-stupid' lender's SVR?

That sounds painful.

Do you think that the BBC (Evan Davis last night) and the government would be saying such things if there was an election coming soon? Gordon Brown has shot himself in the foot. He kept the ball in the air for so long to clear the decks for an autumn election - but now he wants HPC 'over' as quickly as possible. He can blame it on 'world events'. He's living in cloud cuckoo land if he thinks it will be all over in 2 years.

Unfortunately we now have to wait XX amount of years for it to correct as all the same people who had an interest in keeping the prices up do everything they can to slow down the HPC... the fact that everyone on HPC will be right but will be explained away by everyone else as market trends....

I use to cringe when I heard GB claim that he had abolished boom and bust. Markets are by their very nature always in a state of flux, inter-related and establishing new equilibriums at any moment in time. It is first year economics. I do not take any pleasure in the misfortune that many households will face in the near future but the housing market is over due for a market correction. The over supply of money has driven the boom in the housing sector and the blame for this can be laid at the door of New Labour. Government expenditure is not investment, it is consumption. Moreover its funding through taxation and borrowing has crowded out real investment in the economy. Now it's time to pay the bill although those Westminster have their snouts in the trough and it's us who will pick up the bill.

GB knew the chickens were coming home to roost and that is why he was tempted to "go for it" this year.

Well then, here's hoping the credit bubble and unaffordable housing last forever. The last thing I'd want is a bunch of deluded christian retards burning witches, or will it be muslims, at the stake again and insisting teh world is flat and evolution doesn't exist.

Actually Christian revival is all letting God work in our lives, not about mis-using religion to gain political power.

Try looking up John Wesley in Wiki and you'll see that the revival he was involved in inspired people to get involved in many social justice issues such as prison reform and the abolition of slavery.

Don't think I've seen much religion on this site before, as it stretches the HPC theme a bit.

Well heres my sixpennyworth :-

The world is full of religious zealots who believe that theirs is the only true faith - so it follows that quite a lot of them must have it wrong!! Religious fanatics are the most intolerent of other religions I guess (some of them really make me feel uneasy).

Many battles have been fought where opposing armies believed they had God on their side - I suppose 50% of them must have been wrong!!

IMHO there ain't no white bearded old gent sat up in the sky waiting for judgement day, and the whole thing is a myth put about in the early days to control the masses and give power to the few. No, as Barry White said -- 'There ain't no afterlife - when you're gone you're gone'.

That said, if some people feel the need to believe, that's OK by me - you are as entitled to your view as I am to mine. Just don't hand me your propaganda pamphlets in the street, or call round at my house peddling your misguided 'message'. I don't wish to sound smug, but I am quite happy with my own (non) beliefs and I don't need the 10 commandments to know right from wrong.

Back on topic, The office is noticeably quieter - valuation instructions are down. Several local agents are telling me they are having to 'work' to get the sales through. There are still plenty of sales in all price ranges, both BTL and owner occupation, but It does look as though the tide is starting to turn. This could be a temporary blip (we have had quiet periods before), but I'll keep you posted if the trend continues.

Quality banter folks, we should put on "HPC the play" in 2020 when this is all over!

Seriously though (not); I imagine Crash Gordon and Alistair Darling having a relationship very much like General Melchett and Captain Darling in "Blackadder goes forth".

[Darling] "Why didn't you tell me rather than there being no more boom and bust you stiched me up with the biggest bust of them all?"
[Brown] "We have to have some secrets, don't we Darling".

Then we could have baldricks war poem, "the german guns", adapted like this : "boom boom boom, boom boom boom, boom boom boom" [Gordon trys to finish "boom boom boom?"] baldrick replies "no, bust sir".

etc.

Seriously though (honestly), Alistair does seem to want to get the crash over and done with.
