Not so much of a joke if you look at the tens of billions of pounds our government is giving away to Northern Rock at the moment.

If the REAL value of the money that they are hose-piping all over the financial wreckage is essentially nothing, then the effect of its abundance can surely do little more than to further raise awareness of this fact.
They are effectively taking all who invest in US assets for mugs, and, lets face it, those who continue to probably are.

Alas we live in an age where those that are prudent and take responsibility for themselves are left to bail out those that are not. How many people with new cars and 50" plasma TV's have a pension ? How many of these people feel any guilt at tossing their McDonald's packaging out of the car window ? Most have never recycled a single item in their entire lives. Why should they care ?

Seems a whole load of flexibility/corruption has been exposed. All those nice rules and laws look a bit optional when the upper echelons' butts are on the line. Much like the rest of us. Human nature, eh? If you can't be honest as a cleaner, you probably can't be honest as the governor of a central bank. At least human nature is consistent.
