Roger Bootle Speaks Out

BBC News: House price boom 'causing misery'

Roger Bootle Speaks out...
The house price boom of recent years has brought "misery" to thousands of people and represents a "failure" of policy, a leading economist has argued.

Most people see the UK housing market as a story of great success," he told an industry event in Wales.

"I don't. On the contrary, I see it as one of the UK's most unbridled failures."

The root of the problem was the lack of land being made available for new building, he said.

"I wish the government would forget all the gimmicks - affordable housing, key workers and the like," he added.

So it's created a supply and demand problem. Why is it that bloggers on here with the exception of me keep banging on about supply and demand is not the issue. I would agree that it is not the only issue and the reason for the continuing rampant HPI but it is a very big factor. Driving around cities and town in the South-West each and every new apartment development that gets built is bought and populated with renters before you can blink. Supply and demand not and issue! My eye!

While Supply and Demand are clearly an issue, there are other factors.

One colossal social injustice is property speculators buying up of new properties even before they have been built, worsening FTBs chances of ever owning a home of their own.

Now that Gordon Brown has made a virtue of inviting Mrs Thatcher to Downing Street (robbing Cameron's Conservatives of one of their greatest leaders) I, and I'm sure millions like me, have given up any hope of ever seeing any social justice under this government.
