If the shopper can't afford to buy the carpet now, how can they do so in 2009?

I've never understood how a store can offer to sell, say a houselot of new carpet, with no deposit and nothing to pay on the hire purchase agreement for 18 months.

Its just a retail option which allows people to pay later. For example, you can buy in October on the strength of your January 08 bonus.
...unless your company crashes.....!
