I will just try to stop chortling when all these institutions mark the books down to where they "think" they can get away with this time out and people say ... "oh. well thats the extent of it then"

The government has taken a small but significant step down what could be a very slippery slope.
Gordon Brown put his political credibility on the line yesterday by taking the unprecedented step of guaranteeing all savings in Northern Rock accounts. If the queues return -- or worse still, spread to other banks -- it will amount to a public vote of no confidence in Brown's strategy, as well as seriously damaging his authority.
