Economists warned of the heightened risks for corporate borrowers on Wednesday following the first release of the Bank of England’s new quarterly survey of UK credit conditions.

Commercial banks expect the turbulence in financial markets to affect the availability of corporate credit far more than their lending to households, the survey showed.

The Bank said lenders had raised fees and reduced the amount of credit available to the corporate sector over the past three months, partly due to recent market developments, which they expected “to reduce significantly their capacity to extend corporate credit over the next three months”.
