Why our prisons are full ... 9 months for sleeping it off in an un-used car park !!!

Times Online: Is it time to rethink the ASBO?

Sorry a bit off track, but is this where aIl our hard earned Tax is being wasted ???

"The town drunk used to be given a day in the cells sobering up. Now he can be thrown in jail for nine months"
B&B with bacon & eggs in jail = £20, and good public relations.
9 months in jail = something like £5,000 per month, and bad public relations.

Of course the way to get a free house is to murder a headmaster.

My concern is than our legal system sometimes bears little relation to justice or common sense. A combination of over-enthusiastic human rights legislation and political correctness have played havoc with our traditional concept of justice. I don't know if this is still the case, but I remember being told you could be taken to court for (e.g.) putting broken glass on top of your garden wall to protect against burglers - because the poor burglers could cut themselves on it!

I think that this is still correct. But you can
1) put spikes on the wall, to keep off pests such as pidgeons, squirrels, etc. and
2) put razor wire if it is correctly fixed (ie visible at 10 paces!) and
3) put electric fencing up, to keep out the cows, sheep, horses, etc.

We just have to avoid "The Omega Man" type scenario. But if you are a celebrity you are doing this already !!!

"Dr Robert Neville (Charlton Heston) is alone until he meets Lisa (Rosalind Cash) who is worried about her younger brother who is becomming a mutant." A timely reminder that we all live on the same planet and we really should be able to live together. Unfortunately I see too many examples of social overcrowding and ghetto style degradation.

Orwell. You're right. I haven't backed it with evidence. But I don't remember there being much of a compensation culture before human rights came into it. There just seems to be so much of a "It's my human right" attitude around now. The result? Everything seems to be turned back to front. Teachers afraid of their pupils. Police afraid of the criminals, soldiers afraid to fire at terrorists (remember Northern Ireland?) What are they afraid of? They are afraid of the law!
