Out-of-pocket living costs for Australia's 4.5 million working households rose by 3.1 per cent over the past year, well above the broader consumer price index which rose just 2.1 per cent.

"This data is yet more evidence that Mr Howard has fallen deeply out of touch with the realities of many household budgets," he said.
The series of "Analytical Living Cost Indexes" released yesterday by the bureau show payments by working households to financial institutions - through interest on mortgage payments and insurance premiums - rose by 11.4 per cent last financial year.
"This is attributable to the combined impact of increases in debt and higher interest rates," the bureau said.
