Burn your way through red tape in Greece!
Evening Standard: Has Greece been set alight by property developers
Rogue property developers have been accused of starting the forest fires that continue to destroy large swathes of Greece. Police have arrested 33 suspects amid claims that some were paid by developers to get round planning laws.

As there seems no regulation at all of the property 'market' and those in it, one can only wonder?

This is well-established practice in Greece. You are allowed to build on protected forested areas once you have burnt them down, but I guess it has never been done on this scale before. Nice business, property.

A Greek friend of mine suspected that property developers were behind the fires - pretty shocking if that's the case as surely they'll destroy more property than will be built? Plenty of people have been burnt out of their villages close to Athens and fires like this will damage confidence too so it seems like an overall negative to me. Then again property developers aren't exactly the brightest and best society has to offer so they may not have thought this through. A property developer not thinking things through... what other country has that problem...?
