Oh yeah, 10x pay, this is just a rental society in the making.
Times Online: The future of house prices: 10 times pay
"The average home in England currently costs seven times annual earnings, but that is set to rise to ten times by 2026 even if the Government succeeds in its aim of sharply increasing the rate of homebuilding" ... "Campaigners said that the developing crisis would “stop social mobility in its tracks”. " ... We'll need 99 year morgages, to afford this one. Oh is that to go with the 99 year leases (long term rents, paid up front !!! ) on flats anyway.

This might seem to be a bit "over the top" ... but Orwells dreams of "Big Brother" in 1984, and "Animal Farm" are not that far away.
OK some boring statistics, (i.e. lies, misdirections, etc.)
UK Population has grown from 5.6m (1750), 38m (1901), 55m (1970), 60m (2005).
And the land area has not changed, but cities & housing have expanded.
see: http://www.optimumpopulation.org/opt.more.ukpoptable.html
Now compare this with other countries:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Europe
And the housing requirement is just not going to go away.
Perhaps we should all be limited to only one baby, and everyone over 35 should be steralized.
Hey the Planning Department, the Police Force, and the Ministry of "dis"Information would have a field day.
Bring back the death sentance for all criminal convictions, and really turn this country into a Police State.

Utter rubbish
I remember an article in March 2000.
The DJIA was going down fast and the Nasdaq was going up fast.
They forecast that by November 2000 the 2 indices would meet and cross paths.
Simply taking current trends and extending them is utter garbage economics.

s2r1 is right
but I think the point of these articles is to subtly state that if things carry on as they are, society will become worse.
Rather than say what is going to happen they're trying to point out that what is already happening is bad
